There is a case before the Supreme Court that has taken the fallacy of separation of church and state to a new level of absurdity. The state believes that private, religious school children should not have access to the services of a public library because it is funded by the government.

Does that mean that kids who go to religious schools can’t play on public playgrounds, or go to a public zoo, or ride public transportation? These are not illegal aliens who don’t pay taxes. These are American families who pay the same amount in taxes as people who send their kids to public school. Because they choose to send their child to a religious school, they don’t stop being citizens or tax payers. And to disallow these kids access to materials, at a public library, funded by their tax money, as well as others, is blatant discrimination.

This is a version of the old Jim Crow laws that applied to race, but are now applicable to the discrimination of any child who is religious. If this is the prevailing attitude, then stop taxing people with sincerely held religious beliefs if they don’t have equal access to what that money is spent on.

There are many movements in the world that support zero population growth. They always use famine and mass starvation as an excuse. But let’s look at the facts.

There are approximately 6 billion people on the earth today. You could take the entire world population and fit it into the state of Texas and everyone would have 1500 sq. feet of living space. That seems tight you say, but look at Tokyo.

There are 125 million people in Japan, 60 million in Tokyo all with about 1200 sq. ft. per person. They are not starving, in fact there are sushi bars and restaurants on every corner. Even New York City, with 12 million people has approximately 1600 sq. ft. per person. And people are certainly flourishing there.

So it is not as important how many people there are, as it is how they live, what type of system they live under. Are they free to determine their own destiny? Find their own job? Buy their own home? Shop where they want, or are they the pawns of a fallen structure? The numbers to keep an eye on is not those at the bottom, but those at the top. What kind of system is in place that is keeping people from surviving?

Have you heard the joke about why the blonde climbed the chain link fence?

Why is it that blonde jokes are acceptable, but others that ridicule a certain class of people aren’t?

Is it because only blondes have a sense of humor and are secure in their identity? Or is it that they are the only fair game in town and we need some scapegoat to pin these funny jokes on?

But what is interesting, is that blondes know the joke is really on everyone else.

Take the First Lady . . . Hillary Clinton for example. She is blonde, but she is the one having the last laugh on the entire state of New York.

She has convinced them that even though she has never lived there, bought groceries, sent kids to school, voted, held office, held a job, or paid taxes, in that state, that she, above anyone else from that state, would best represent them.

So a blonde is finally having the last laugh at the expense of everyone else.

She, single-handedly has changed the paradigm for all blondes and hopefully we will see an end to these very extremist, bigoted, hateful, blondophobish jokes. Or not.

By the way . . . the blonde climbed the chain link fence to see what was on the other side.

I recently attended the first birthday party for a little Korean girl. In the Korean culture, this traditionally is the most important birthday because if the child survived a year, the chances were good for a long life.

At the party, the parents are seated on both sides of the baby with a variety of objects in front of them including a pencil, money, and a book. The purpose is to see what the baby chooses first because that will determine what they will be in life.

For example, if they choose money, they will be in business or be wealthy. If they choose a book they will be a teacher or scholar.

So it is important to limit the choices your child has, just incase they reach for the wrong thing. But what is interesting is that this family put a Bible on the table as well. For them, that was as important a choice for the baby as wealth, education and profession. This clearly was a break with the Korean tradition. But by allowing the child to have access to the Word of God, they were giving her a choice at a happy life .. . no matter what else she chose on the table.

By the way . . . she chose the Bible. This is Nina May at ninamay.com asking if that would be your choice.

What in the world do leaping lords, French hens, swimming swans, and especially the partridge who won’t come out of the pear tree have to do with Christmas? Today, I found out.

From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church.

Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember.

  • The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.
  • Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.
  • Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.
  • The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John.
  • The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old Testament.
  • The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation Seven swans a-swimming represented
  • The sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit-Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.
  • The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.
  • The nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit-Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control.
  • The ten lords a-leaping were the ten commandments.
  • The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.
  • The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles’ Creed.

So there is your history lesson for today. This knowledge was shared with me and I found it interesting and now I know how that strange song became a Christmas Carol. Merry Christmas!

The Year 2000 Presidential elections will go down in history as the year of the double standards.

The health of Senator John McCain is questioned, while President Clinton was never required to released his medical records. McCain has released his.

George W. is castigated for not knowing a Jeopardy question while Al Gore’s dumb quotes are making the rounds on the Internet, without one word in the mainstream press.

Like the one where he says, “It isn’t pollution that’s harming the environment. It’s the impurities in our air and water that are doing it.” or “[It’s] time for the human race to enter the solar system.”

My favorite one is when he said, “I was recently on a tour of Latin America, and the only regret I have was that I didn’t study Latin harder in school so I could converse with those people.”

Buchanan and Bauer are called extremists when Gore compared the U.S. Army to a “fascist, totalisarian regime,” and thinks cars should be eliminated. And Steve Forbes is accused of being wooden and lacking charisma while we are supposed to believe that Al Gore is Mr. Personality.

Something tells me though, none of this hypocrisy is lost on the voters… but we’ll see next November if the hyprocisy spin worked.

Do hate crimes apply to people who silence sincerely held religious beliefs?

Like the situation in Chicago where they don’t want the Baptists to hold their convention because they think they might foment hate speech? So now the Bible is hate speech? Can you see where this is going?

But what’s interesting is, that it seems to be a forgotten point that the murders in Columbine and Wedgewood Baptist were motivated by hate against Christians.

The shootings in the Bible Class in Tennessee were motivated by hate against the Bible believers. The church in London, where ten members were attacked by a sword-wielding man, during a church service . .. .certainly wasn’t motivated by bad singing.

It seems as though there are far more instances where Christians are being targeted for persecution, death, and execution, than any other group these days, yet they are suspect as fomenting hate.

If the government really intends to target a certain group for persecution, then be honest about it. Don’t claim it is that group that is causing the problem… That is double speak at it’s best.

Christians might complain that Christmas has become so commercial and that culture is trying to change the meaning, or ignore the significance. But it seems the more they do, the more the world is reminded of the truth . . . in all languages . . . by most people who have been hearing Christmas carols their whole lives.

Without really understanding it, Christians and non-Christians alike, are singing the praises of God, verifying the Deity of Christ, and reminding the world that He truly is our Lord and King.

“Joy to the world, the Lord has come, let earth receive her king.  Noel, Noel, born is the King of Israel.  Round yon virgin, mother and child, holy infant, so tender and mild.  Oh morning stars together, proclaim the holy birth, and praises sing to God the King, and peace to men on earth.  Hail the king, Christ the savior is born.”

And before the first carol was written or first song sung by man, God ensured that the angels would herald the birth of his son, and sing His praises to the heavens.

“The world in solemn stillness lay, to hear the angels sing.  Shepherds hear the angels singing ’Alleluia!’  It came upon a midnight clear, that glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earth, to touch their harps of gold.   And still their heavenly music floats o’er all the weary world. And the star rains its fire while the beautiful sing, for the manger of Bethlehem cradles a King.”

So it doesn’t matter how commercial Christmas gets, or how hard people try to ignore or change the meaning. The same God who sent His son to earth, with angels heralding his arrival, can cause the rocks and stones to sing to celebrate His birth . . . but I’m sure He would rather hear it from His children, of their own free will. Wouldn’t you?

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Some Animals . . . (small humanoids excluded from that group), are trying to make an impact. They have produced large bill boards, aimed at fast food chains. They show the severed head of a cow next to a bag of french fries, and ask if it looks appetizing.

Most people I know who field-dress their game can do it with a sandwich in one hand and knife in the other. Every butcher, cattle farmer, veterinarian, doctor, forensics expert, Hollywood producer . . .has seen worse than that. Even children exposed to violent video games would not be shocked or stunned by the presence of a cow’s head next to a bag of fries in an ad.

But what is confusing, and a bit shocking is that these people don’t even know what part of the cow is eaten. Sure, some might eat the brains, but the best part is the tenderloin area. That very lean, tender side of the cow that is so highly priced.

Maybe to really make the point though, they should show a picture of a baby being partially delivered and then murdered as it is hanging out of the birth canal. Now that sight, next to bag of fries, might get the message across that we should not be cruel to animals.

There are a number of people who monitor this station and the programs for various purposes. We know, because we get calls from them and they tell us that is the only reason they are listening. But we are thankful for that.

So in the spirit of the holiday season, I want to share a message just for them. . . There is a God, He loves you and He has a wonderful purpose for your life . . . and He wants you to know what it is.

We love when you call because it gives us an opportunity to pray for you by name and pray blessings on you and your life. The purpose of the commentaries is to encourage people to change their paradigms, challenge status quo, look at things from a different perspective. I would issue that challenge to you.

If you have disregarded, rejected or ignored God in the past, now is the time, at the dawn of a new Millennium to understand that you were fearfully and wonderfully made and He loves you very much.

We encourage you to call us and let us tell you more about His love for you. We look forward to hearing from you . . . again.
